Home Roofing:

Roofing options include:

  • Slate: This stone material is among the most expensive of the roofing materials but will last the lifetime of the building.
  • Wood: eg. Cedar. Flamable and hazardous in hot dry climates.
  • Asphalt: The cheapest.
  • Clay: This is duarable and can last the lifetime of the building. Popular for the Southern California "Spanish Mission" look.
  • Metal roofs: Long lasting but smooth texture may not match the home look. New textured metal shingles have progressed metal roofs to new looks. The ultimate in cost and elegance is the Copper roof.

Slate Roofing:

While expensive to install and repair, it should last the lifetime of the building.

The valley is typically formed metal. This photo shows a roof which recieves winter snow and thus has the snow arrestors to slow the speed of sliding snow. A slate roof does not offer much grip for snow.
This shows yet another example of a slate roof with snow arrestors.

Wood Roofing:

The typical wood roof is made of Cedar. There are now synthetic composite roofs manufatured to resemble wood.

The typical cedar shingled roof when installed looks like freshly cut wood. This look does not last long as the weather and natural biological elements soon turn the cedar to a light grey-brown look which is more typical.

The roof is first covered in tar paper to protect the wood from moisture and mildew.

Asphalt Roofing:

Available in many styles, asphalt shingles improve with thickness. The thickest give the shingle a look of having three dimentional depth while the cheapest look thin and matted to the roof surface.

Metal Roofing:

Copper is the most costly but one of the most durable. It installs as a dark brown color but weathers to a turquoise green with age.
